After completing the SAP process, the return-to-duty (RTD) test is the final step before resuming safety-sensitive work. It confirms that you are ready to return to duty safely and responsibly. Understanding how the test works helps you prepare with confidence.
When You Are Eligible for the RTD Test
You cannot take the RTD test until your SAP has verified that you have completed all recommended education and treatment requirements. Once cleared, your employer or a third-party administrator will schedule the test at a certified collection site.
What the RTD Test Includes
The return-to-duty test screens for the same substances as all DOT drug and alcohol tests: marijuana metabolites, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and PCP. For alcohol testing, your blood alcohol level must be below 0.02.
Testing is conducted under observation to maintain integrity and prevent tampering.
What Happens After You Pass
If your result is negative, your employer reports the test outcome to the DOT Clearinghouse, and your status changes from “Prohibited” to “Not Prohibited.” You can then resume your duties in a safety-sensitive role.
However, your compliance journey does not end here. The SAP will outline a follow-up testing plan that includes random tests over one to five years.
How to Prepare for Success
The best preparation is simple: follow your SAP’s recommendations fully, stay substance-free, and communicate honestly with your employer. Arrive well-rested, hydrated, and focused on your goals.
The RTD process is more than a requirement; it is an opportunity to rebuild trust and demonstrate professionalism. Every step is designed to help you reenter the workforce responsibly and confidently.
