I need a SAP evaluation for work – how does that process work?

As certified Substance Abuse Professionals, we handle the entire SAP process for DOT violations. First, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation to understand your situation and recommend appropriate education or treatment. After you complete those recommendations, we do a follow-up evaluation to determine if you’re ready for return-to-duty testing. We also provide ongoing monitoring as required. Throughout the process, we treat you with dignity and respect while ensuring full compliance with federal regulations.

If you receive a violation, the first step is to meet with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). Federal law requires that you complete a Return-to-Duty (RTD) process before resuming any safety-sensitive work. This process includes an evaluation, recommended education or treatment, and follow-up testing to verify compliance. Until you complete this process, you’re not eligible to return to duty under DOT regulations.

Yes. The Department of Transportation (DOT) mandates that any employee who violates drug or alcohol testing rules must be evaluated by a qualified and DOT-certified SAP. Only a SAP can determine what steps you need to take to meet federal return-to-duty requirements.

No. The evaluation must be conducted by a DOT-qualified SAP — not a general counselor, therapist, or medical professional. Only SAPs trained in DOT regulations and substance use assessment are authorized to make the official recommendations your employer can accept.

Every situation is unique, but most individuals complete the process within four to six weeks, depending on the recommended education or treatment. HVI DOT SAP helps you move through each step as efficiently as possible while maintaining full compliance with federal regulations.

Once you complete your education or treatment, you’ll return for a follow-up evaluation. Your SAP will confirm your compliance and authorize your Return-to-Duty test. If the test is negative, your SAP will send official documentation to your employer confirming that you’re eligible to resume work.

Follow-up testing is a required part of the DOT compliance process after you return to work. Your SAP will create a customized testing plan that typically lasts one to five years, depending on your individual circumstances. These tests are unannounced and must be completed to maintain your compliance status.

Yes. All SAP evaluations and records are handled with strict confidentiality in accordance with federal privacy regulations. Information is only shared with your employer or designated representatives as required by DOT compliance guidelines.
